CAMPFIRE

The Campfire by Eleanor

The stars were shining brightly, in the open night sky as we walked down the hill in pitch black with torches in our hands. We walked along to the grave filled with logs, or as everyone else calls it the bonfire place. I watched as Aaron lit a match then two or three more and finally it worked and the fire was very very slowly becoming bigger and bigger until the whole log pile was alight and burning bright. It was like the fire had a temper, thrashing into the night sky leaving red hot embers floating around in the sky like a ghost.

After awhile the fire burned down to just hot embers, which was good because I was getting tired of the smoke in my eyes. Then we roasted marshmallows, I burnt mine so it was soft on the inside and burnt on the outside, they were delicious. When we were done Mr Harrison said it was time to cook some bread dough, he called us over a few people at a time and he gave us a ball of dough for us to wrap around our sticks. And then he told us to cook it over the embers. The cooking took ages eventually I gave up and my mum did it for me, when it was finally done I got a choice of having my bread with honey or jam, but I had mine plain, I loved it. When everyone was finished we left the embers to disappear over night, then we climbed back up the hill to camp and we went straight to bed because it was really late.
